Today, as many celebrate St. Patricks Day, I get to celebrate a special birthday. It's my mother's birthday. I owe my life to Ramonita Rosado. My mother has taught me so much about life and survival. She married my father Juan Luis Figueroa and they had five children Neysa, Eve, Aidi, Luis, and Marie (me). My father suffered from paranoid schizophrenia as did his father and was on heavy psychotic medications when I was conceived. My mother had four children to care for as well as a mentally ill husband and against the recommendation of the doctors she chose life for me. I am thankful for her decision and for her determination to fight for us.
When I was 1 1/2 my father took a turn for the worst and took his life. He was 33 years old. My mother was left widowed with five children to raise. She did what she had to do to provide for us and I don't mean food stamps. This woman refused to live off of anyone. She had two and sometimes three jobs to support our family. When I was 3 1/2 she married my dad Cesar Rosado. That decision allowed me to have a father and father he was. He taught me how to swim, do dishes, make beds, and peel oranges. : ) And much more. I'm thankful to my mom for giving me a dad.
My mother currently lives in Puerto Rico with my brother who also deals with mental illness. She has lived her life to care for him and provide for him an environment of peace and calmness. If you met my mom, you would never know the life she's been handed because she is always positive, always smiling. Her faith in God and in his provision for her has kept her sane somehow. God has been the pillar that has kept her standing.
I praise God for my mom. She is beautiful inside and out. I love you mom.
